Biography

New Zealand

My initials are G.B.D. which happen to be the notes found in the musical chord G major which is why I'm known as 'G'. I'm also known as Greg Dyer.

I'm New Zealand born & bred of English descent. If you're interested in seeing New Zealand native plants, birds, reptiles, scenery etc. you may enjoy Rod Morris' photography.

My first career was in computers from 1991 to 2001. My musical tastes range from Early European Classical & Religious music, a variety of Electronica, Rock, Chicago Blues, to funk or ballad Jazz music. Music didn't really feature in my life until I was 24.

The harmonica itself did feature in it's own way from time to time, my first memory when I was three years old, when my family were living in a small coal mining town on the West Coast shore of New Zealand's South Island called 'Granity', the friendly next door neighbour gave me a harmonica. Now I gift harmonicas to young children too.

I really took an interest in learning to play the harmonica properly around 1996. Music and the harmonica really began to consume my life around 1999 and that's when I got fustrated with the stock instrument and started learning how to fix them up for myself.
That same year I noticed the lack of education for chromatic harmonica on the internet and began The Chromatic Harmonica Reference which ended up being a two year project in my spare time. I also took a strong interest in the harmonica community, where I learnt a great deal about the instrument, playing music and amplification. My staunch supporter in the Harp On! projects Pat Missin, a veteren professional musician, already has a legacy of his own including a successful (and notable) career customising & tuning harmonicas.

You can read about my cat Smokey, listen to a few early sound bites, a couple of sketchs, and some humour. My time is now spent customising and repairing harmonicas, working on my chops, and part time intellectual disability support.
